Bathroom and Bedroom Safety Upgrades That Matter Most

High-impact safety upgrades for the two places where many falls and nighttime emergencies happen.

Bathrooms and bedrooms deserve special attention because many falls happen during private routines: showering, toileting, getting out of bed, changing clothes, or walking in the dark. Safety upgrades should be practical, visible, and easy to use.

Bathroom priorities

  • Install real grab bars near the toilet and shower. Towel bars are not safe substitutes.
  • Use a shower chair or bench if balance, fatigue, or dizziness is a concern.
  • Add non-slip surfaces in and outside the shower.
  • Use a handheld shower head and easy-reach toiletries.
  • Improve lighting and remove bath mats that slide.

Bedroom priorities

  • Keep a clear path from bed to bathroom.
  • Add night lights and a bedside lamp that is easy to reach.
  • Keep phone, glasses, walker, cane, water, and emergency button within reach.
  • Use a bed height that allows feet to rest on the floor when sitting.
  • Remove clutter, cords, and unstable furniture.

Use fall-prevention resources

The CDC's STEADI program provides older adult fall prevention resources. CDC also offers a Check for Safety home fall prevention checklist families can use room by room.

Ask for professional help when needed

An occupational therapist can recommend safer ways to bathe, transfer, and move through the home. A contractor may be needed for properly anchored grab bars, ramps, stair rails, and doorway changes.

Use YouRetire tools

Add safety tasks to the Retirement Move Checklist. If the home cannot be made safe enough, compare home care and assisted living costs before an emergency forces a rushed move.
